FELIX HELL

THE ORGAN, SEBASTIAN BACH and FELIX....
                             A MUSICAL "TRIFECTA" IN ALABAMA

The Huntsville Chamber Music Guild presented organist
Felix Hell
on its 55th HCMG CELEBRITY SERIES
 on March 7 and 8, 2008.
From the Presentor....
..

The dual programs, by our request, were the major Toccatas, Preludes and Fugues of J. S. Bach. On these two evenings Felix drew crowds of 1400,  giving him several standing ovations each evening, and Felix responding with several encores both nights. He also appeared for an hour in a "live" interview on WLRH, the local Public Radio Station, where he handled himself like the "pro" he is, with the phone lines ringing constantly!  The HCMG Series has featured artists Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade, Chanticleer, The Vienna Choir Boys, Emerson String Quartet, the Moscow Philharmonic with Jimmy Lin, the Beaux Arts Trio, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Empire Brass, Guraneri String Quartet, King's Singers, Dame  Gillian Weir, Paul Jacobs, Ruth Slenczynska, all the current Van Cliburn winners, among  many other major artists. Felix was greeted with equal enthusiasm by the audiences accustomed to these "stars" , and, in fact, he also sold out of several of his CDs  (As many CDs as Yo-Yo and Itzhak and Josh Bell!)  What a wonderful happening for the organ, and the autograph lines were even longer!
Having been at the Indiana University School of Music in organ for many years, and privileged through the years to know and hear organists like Catharine Crozier, Diane Bish, Gillian Weir, Virgil Fox, and Claire Cocci, I must say that Felix certainly holds his own and more, even at the young age of 22!
.   His level of technical, musical and insightful playing in both programs was somewhere between astounding and off-the-charts. We already have numerous requests for his quick return. To say he was a hit, indeed, is an understatement.  At this rate, Felix has to be headed for even higher "stardom" in the music world.
