Community Arts Program (CAP)

Summer Concert Series marks its 32nd Season,

at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ,

with a Spectacular Summer Concert Series Line-up.

MIAMI, FL - This summer, June 8 through August 17, in a quiet Miami neighborhood within the historic Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ’s intimate, Spanish-revival style setting, concertgoers will have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by some of the music industry’s most talented and revered classical and jazz figures. These artists will perform and delight audiences at the Community Arts Program (CAP) 2017 Summer Concert Series!

The Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 64,000 people since it began in 1985. The Series has grown into a time-honored tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that provides music education to children in its Conservatory for the Arts. “The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ,” says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. “The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit.”

We are very excited to again present a diverse and world-class line up of artists,” says Mark Hart, Executive & Artistic Director of the Community Arts Program. “It’s an honor to welcome concertgoers locally, from across the state, and as far away as Europe; and rewarding to see the growth of our music education program for kids! In all, we’ve come to provide exceptional cultural- and educationally-enriching experiences for more than 3,000 children and adults each year!”

New Orleans’ Grammy Award-winning musician and actor Chris Thomas King is one of the world’s most influential artists, and has changed the way we think about blues. He is also known for his role as itinerant bluesman Tommy Johnson in the George Clooney film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Chris has sold more than 10 million records in this country, and is the leading blues guitarist of his generation. With guitar in hand, Chris Thomas King creates a passage from the folk blues revival of the ’60s and reinvigorates the blues as a living African-American art. This is to be an unforgettable evening!

If one hasn’t yet heard Tony Monaco play the hottest B-3 around, they are in for a treat! In 2000, Joey DeFrancesco produced Tony’s debut recording, Burnin’ Grooves, and an international success was born, secured by eight more releases and tours around the globe. In a rousing evening with guitarist Tim Jago and drummer David Chiverton, Tony’s Hammond B-3 virtuosity on jazz standards absolutely promises to raise the roof… and raise concertgoers out of their seats!

The CAP 2017 Summer Concert Series concludes with one of the most multifaceted groups in any genre: the Grammy Award-winning LAGQ. Comprised of four uniquely gifted and accomplished musicians, the LAGQ consistently plays to sold-out houses around the world. They break new ground with their inventive, critically acclaimed transcriptions, from concert masterworks to contemporary and world-music realms. In a program that spans Latin, African, Far East, Irish, folk, European and American classics, concertgoers will be transported around the globe in a breathtaking concert experience!

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church presents New Directions Chamber Winds SUMMER ABROAD 2017 - A Fantastic Journey and Musical Travelogue featuring the World Premiere of Stephen Vincent Casellas CASSINI FANTASIE: Cruising through Saturn's rings.

New Directions Chamber Winds (NDCW) is an informal group of musicians from Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties who have come together to establish a chamber music group for their enjoyment and betterment as musicians. NDCW is a self-directed ensemble. As a large non-professional chamber wind ensemble that is not affiliated with a larger established organization or educational institution, NDCW is unique in South Florida.

NDCW is fundamentally a double woodwind quintet. The ensemble consists of: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, and two horns; with the occasional doubling and additionof auxiliary instruments: Piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, contra-bassoon, additional horns, and String Bass.

NDCW's members come from diverse backgrounds and musical paths. We are active and retired music professionals and educators; we are recreational musicians - enthusiastic amateurs pursuing non-music related careers; and some of us are retired from our careers and have chosen to continue to pursue the joy of making music.

NDCW is commited to creating quality performances of large scale chamber music. Our repeertoire includes original works; transcriptions of larger, more familiar orchestral works, and occasional forays into new compositions.

NDCW is blessed and privileged to call Good Shepherd Lutheran Church its home. We are fortunate to have generous and supportive friends at Good Shepherd. We thank them for making this performance possible.

Suggested $10 donationat the door.

Reception to follow the performance.
