Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, “O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. Movements include liturgical Latin, intertwined Hebrew and Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, Spanish, Song of the Earth (untexted), and a closing movement combining several of these languages with English. The result is a stunning global celebration of joy, as all the earth sings as one, “omnis terra, jubilate!”

Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo”

to South Florida Audiences

Nova Southeastern University’s community concert choir, Nova Singers, under the artistic direction of Chuck Stanley, will debut a contemporary choral composition this month. Composer Dan Forrest [http://danforrest.com] has created “Jubilate Deo” — which "brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, 'O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,' by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language,” Forrest explains on his website.

Movements include liturgical Latin, intertwined Hebrew and Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, Spanish, Song of the Earth (which is untexted), and a closing movement combining several of these languages with English. According to Forrest, “the result is a stunning global celebration of joy, as all the earth sings as one, 'omnis terra, jubilate!'"

“This is one of the most challenging and exciting choral compositions we’ve ever undertaken,” said Chuck Stanley. “It is a joyous, multicultural celebration of the psalm text.”

Three years ago — in March, 2014 — Nova Singers premiered Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living” to South Florida audiences in three standing-room-only performances in Broward and Palm Beach Conunty. Later that summer the choir participated in a performance — with the composer — in Chicago.

Three South Florida performances are planned:

MARCH 17, 2017, FRIDAY at 8:00 pm at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church: 370 SW 3rd Street, Boca Raton

MARCH 19, 2017, SUNDAY at 4:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church (The Pink Church): 2331 NE 26th Avenue, Pompano Beach

MARCH 21, 2017, TUESDAY at 7:30 pm at Christ Church: 4845 NE 25th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale

Coincidentally the same weekend the choir introduces “Jubilate Deo” to South Florida, it will be performed in New York City’s Carnegie Hall with the composer in attendance. South Florida’s concert tickets are $5/students; $15/advance tickets (from any member of the choir or the Nova Singers website nova.edu/novasingers); or at the door on concert day ~ $20/person.
