Classical Music Concerts, Recitals and Events

PARKING  Since we have no parking lot, parking at Bethesda-by-the-Sea is a challenge!  Although the police often ignore it when people park on South County Road for Sunday morning services, it is always illegal to park there, and you may receive a ticket.  Whenever Barton Avenue (the street along the south side of the church) is posted as one-way — which it will be for all our concerts and services — you may park on either side of that street (facing west).  You may also park in the "residential parking only" section of Barton Avenue, from South County Road west to Central Avenue.  If Via Bethesda (the small road between The Breaker's golf course and the church) has room, you may park there according to the directions posted on various signs.  Other than that, you must seek parking spaces on the local side streets.  Here is a link to a map of our local streets:  https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zztLHfWotYQY.knIoWIfhWr9U&msa=0&ll=26.711439,-80.036688&spn=0.001577,0.00284

Bedrich Smetana First String Quartet, From My Life (1876)

Antonín Dvorák String Quartet #13 in G major, Op. 106 (1895)

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride, the symphonic cycle Má vlast ("My Homeland"), and for his First String Quartet, From My Life. After becoming deaf, Smetana began composing the string quartet. It was to be his intimate confession, a work depicting the course of his life, "using four instruments speaking among themselves in something like a friendly circle."

Following the nationalist example of Smetana, Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) frequently employed aspects, specifically rhythms, of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia. Dvorák's own style has been described as "the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them." In 1895 he composed the String Quartet #13 in G major, Op. 106. 1895 was an eventful year for him: he returned to Europe from America and his sister-in-law and first love both died.
