St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church is a historic congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America that supports the making of excellent and diverse Church Music, grounded in the Lutheran liturgical tradition.  The Cantor, under the direction of the Senior Pastor, is charged with making music that is meaningful, engaging of the assembly, diverse, and of high quality.  We seek a candidate who is an exceptionally hard worker to build this parish’s music program into one of the finest in the Twin Cities.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

  • To enhance the worship experience by fully utilizing music and instruments from traditional Lutheran liturgy, Central American, African, gospel, African American spirituals, and other traditions.
  • To develop and expand musical involvement from the congregation, volunteers, children, and community members, including individual and group performance, liturgical assistants, and special programming.  
  • To demonstrate excellent leadership skills, musical knowledge, skills and experience with piano, organ, other musical instruments, and clear understanding of the Lutheran liturgy.
  • To exhibit excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with demonstrated ability to plan effectively, be punctual, and communicate in a timely fashion.
  • To be a mentor to others, model kindness and respect, and see the Holy One in all team members, volunteers, staff, congregants, community members, friends, and strangers.   

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Cantor is charged chiefly with:

  • Leading the assembly’s song for all liturgical celebrations;
  • Planning, making, and leading music appropriate to the liturgical calendar;
  • Conducting the parish Choir, as well as the development of children’s choirs;
  • Overseeing four paid professional section leaders;
  • Excellent skills on the organ;
  • Understanding clearly the theological foundations of the Lutheran liturgy;
  • Programing, performing, and scheduling world music and music from non-European traditions;
  • Excellent skills on the piano, making use of African-American spirituals, gospel music, etc.
  • Working with instrumentalists, instrumental ensembles, and the parish brass group;
  • Working with and scheduling volunteer cantors;
  • Development of community outreach, concert series, and hosting guest artists.
